CMI/Aalborg University and Omada to Foster Future Innovation

Center for Communication, Media and Information Technologies (CMI) at Aalborg University in Copenhagen and Omada have entered into an agreement, which aims to foster research collaboration between the center and Omada, strengthening the innovative capacities of the industry and advancing industry-driven research and innovation, amongst others by establishing a cyberlab to give students hands-on experience in the detection and prevention of cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

Cybersecurity is more important than ever. To help continue to drive research and innovation within the sector, Omada has entered into an agreement with the Copenhagen based Center for Communication, Media and Information Technologies (CMI) at Aalborg University to ensure this remains top of mind.

CMI is a leader within the sector, already offering Identity and Access Management, Cybercrime and Information Security Law and Cybersecurity and Trust educations. It is due to this expertise, that Omada, itself a leader in the field of identity management and access governance has chosen to collaborate with the university.

“As one of the leading players within our field, we have an obligation to support the development and nurturing of new talent. Headquartered in Denmark, it is a natural next step for us to foster the future talent in what we believe is a high-growth market, where there is an unmet need for skilled young people and innovators to keep supporting the sector’s growth,” says Brian Hansen, Executive Vice President, Consulting, Omada. “Aalborg University is the only university in the country to offer an education tailor made for what we do, and with previous positive experience working with the university, it was an easy choice for us. We have great expectations for this partnership”.

Putting cybersecurity on the (school) agenda

The collaboration, which runs for an initial five-year term, seeks to foster a collaboration on research, lectures, scholarly and technical meetings and national and international symposia. Key points to the partnership include joint industry and research activities, teaching programs about cybersecurity, cybercrime, privacy and compliance, an exchange of scholars, researchers and advisory/support staff, exchange of information and materials in fields which are of joint interest, as well as scholarly and industry information such as research papers, white papers and the like.

“CMI has a long tradition of successful collaboration with the industry, both within research and teaching. Respecting both parties’ integrity, we want to exploit synergies to develop world class competencies within cybersecurity and privacy,” says Professor Knud Erik Skouby, Director, CMI. “These being complex and difficult fields, the challenges in the area need multifaceted approaches, drawing on expertise and solutions from both industry and academia,” he adds.

The agreement, effective immediately, includes internships at Omada and the establishment of a cybersecurity lab for researchers and students at the CMI premises in Copenhagen. The main goal of the lab is to give students hands-on experience in the detection and prevention of cybersecurity vulnerabilities that exist today, and assist researchers in designing and developing secure enterprise architectures, services and applications, keeping threats and attacks in mind.

A mutual interest in raising awareness

CMI and Omada both have an interest in getting cybersecurity, cybercrime, privacy and compliance on the agenda. They see a need for research, training, development and dissemination of knowledge about cybersecurity, cybercrime, privacy and compliance and developing and promoting a national higher education within the sector.
